The Emergency Department at Myrtue Medical Center is staffed 24/7 with
highly trained professionals specializing in medical emergencies providing
our patients with accessible patient and family-centered care.
Emergency Department Addition + Renovation 2023-2024
Myrtue Medical Center’s Board of Trustees approved a $7.7 million
dollar expansion and renovation of the Emergency Department. With the
receipt of grant funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
in the amount of $1 million to spearhead the project, the hospital will
move forward with renovation to increase space and improve workflow in
the Emergency Department with the addition of patient rooms and staff
work areas.
We are a Level IV Trauma Center serving Shelby County and surrounding communities
under the medical direction of Dr. Scott Markham. We maintain close relationships
with Level I trauma centers in Omaha, Nebraska. Myrtue is the first critical
access hospital in the state of Iowa to receive the American Heart Association’s
Mission:Lifeline Silver Referring Achievement Award for excellence in
cardiac care.
Our 5-bed emergency room cares for all types of emergencies including heart
attacks, strokes, trauma, fractures, serious medical emergencies, mental
health issues and other urgent care needs. We offer tele-stroke services
through the University of Nebraska Medical Center as well as tele-psych
assessments. Our emergency room staff works closely with LifeFlight, Medivac,
Shelby County EMS and the local volunteer ambulance services in addition
to ancillary departments such as lab, diagnostic imaging, respiratory
therapy, anesthesia and surgery.

Seizure or sudden loss of consciousness
Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg
Heart attack, chest pain or chest pressure
Disorientation or difficulty speaking
Severe shortness of breath or severe asthma attack
Head injury or major trauma
Blurred vision or loss of vision
Severe cuts or burns
Overdose
Uncontrolled bleeding
Coughing up or vomiting blood
Possible broken bones
Severe allergic reactions
Major injuries
