About Us

Myrtue Medical Center is a 25-bed critical access hospital and serves the rural communities in Shelby County, Iowa. Myrtue has Rural Health Clinics in the cities of Harlan, Avoca, Earling, Elk Horn, and Shelby. The hospital is located in Harlan adjacent to the clinic. Throughout our clinics and hospital, we see over 116,000 patient visits per year and on average have 11 patients in the hospital every day. A few of our services include primary care, obstetrics, pediatrics, orthopedics, surgery, digital imaging, radiology (x-ray, MRI, CT, mammography, ultrasound, vascular studies), inpatient, behavioral health, cardiac rehabilitation, health coaching, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, public health, home health, hospice, sleep studies, sports medicine, emergency, inpatient, and many outpatient specialty services and providers. Across from the hospital is Myrtue’s 44,439 square-foot wellness center and aquatic complex.

Background Checks

Myrtue Medical Center conducts background checks, including but not limited to Criminal History, Medicare Fraud, License, and/or Certification verifications. If any new employee fails any of the background checks conducted by Human Resources, the job offer may be rescinded based on information received.

Drug Testing

Candidates selected for employment, including rehires, will be required to complete an initial alcohol/drug screen and the results will be furnished to Human Resources. A positive result shall disqualify the applicant from employment. This applies to candidates for full-time, part-time, or on-call and PRN positions.

Immunization/Vaccination Requirements

A health screening is part of the pre-employment process and will be scheduled by Myrtue Medical Center prior to the first day of employment. Before the start date, proof of at least one vaccination for COVID-19 is required, or a request may be made for exemption if immunization is medically contraindicated or contrary to a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance. A two-step Tuberculin skin test also is required. In addition, Myrtue requires an annual influenza vaccination for all employees. If immunization/vaccination records are not available, titers may be drawn and vaccinations offered free of charge.
