Hospice

At Myrtue Medical Center Hospice, we place a strong emphasis on the quality of life. Our goal is to ensure that individuals in the terminal stages of a disease can live their lives to the fullest extent possible while remaining comfortable. We view the process of dying as a natural occurrence and will not expedite or delay it. It is our belief that by empowering clients and their families to make personalized decisions, we can help them lead more meaningful lives.

Philosophy

  • Affirms quality of life, not quantity
  • Focuses on the individual, not the disease, with emphasis on physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being
  • Provides up-to-date pain and symptom control in the comfort of one’s home
  • Involves the entire family in care and decision-making
  • Supports the patient’s desire to remain in the home setting as long as physically and emotionally individualized, not the disease, with emphasis on physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being

Your Hospice Care Team

Our Hospice team not only focuses on the individual's needs but also provides comfort and support for the entire family. Depending on what the patient needs, the Hospice Care Team consists of:

  • Patient's Primary Physician
  • Registered Nurses
  • Home Health Aides
  • Medical Social Worker
  • Chaplain Services
  • Bereavement Counselor
  • Volunteers
  • Pharmacist
  • Physical, Speech, and Occupational Therapists

Our fully licensed/certified staff have been screened and evaluated for professional competence and character. We will treat you with courtesy and respect and all information will be kept confidential. You will be told the name and classification of all personnel caring for you, and as well as participating in planning your care, you will receive information about your diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and medications prescribed in consultation with your physician. While receiving our care, you will have the right to make decisions and to refuse or accept treatment and you will be told in advance the charges for services and the amount you will be responsible for. This is our commitment to you.

The volunteer program is a vital part of our Hospice team. They provide support and companionship for patients and families, do respite care and they do personal, or business errands for the family. They may also help with general office work at Community Health. All volunteers working with patients and families are required to attend a scheduled training program provided by the Hospice department.

The social worker coordinates and assists families with life issues, work demands, financial questions, funeral planning, and follow-up care for up to 12 months after your loved one's death.

Bereavement Counselor care is provided by trained Hospice staff to counsel family members during their bereavement at no cost to the family. Personal counseling, support groups, and classes are made available to families on an ongoing basis.
