Myrtue Medical Center and Local Hospitals Face Shortage of Contrast Materials

Local hospitals face shortage of contrast material used in CT scans

The shutdown of a GE Healthcare manufacturing facility during a COVID-19 lockdown has led to a significant shortage of CT contrast material worldwide. While the facility has since re-opened and production has resumed, the shortage is expected to continue into July.

CT contrast is used for certain CT scan imaging exams to enhance organs, tissues and blood vessels during the scan.

“Every hospital around us is dealing with this shortage. We are working very closely with medical staff to assure patients are receiving the appropriate imaging exam needed. Patients may have an exam rescheduled until the contrast supply has been replenished. They may also have an alternative imaging exam recommended that does not use this type of contrast. Regardless, we are keeping patients best interests in mind as we work through this challenge,” said Keri Sonderman, Myrtue Medical Center Diagnostic Imaging Manager.

Patients should contact their medical care provider if they have any questions or concerns.
