Petersen Family Wellness Center

On-call position.  Works various hours Saturdays and Sundays.  Provides supervision, guidance, and assistance upon entering the Wellness Center.  Assists with membership enrollment, POS, and customer service to Wellness Center participants; ensures the general appearance of the facility, entry desk and vending areas are clean and in good working order, and performs documentation and record keeping as required.  Knowledge and use of exercise equipment preferred.  PFWC will provide on-the-job training.

Nursing Supervisor

On-call position (12 hours per week).  Works various days Sunday through Saturday; works every third weekend.  Manages nursing activities in the delivery of quality, cost-effective patient care.  Directs, coordinates, and participates in the delivery of patient care.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  staff performance appraisals, staff and scheduling, quality improvement, achievement of departmental goals, and membership on Nurse Management Council.  Develops, implements, and evaluates goals, policies, and procedures, standards of practice, and new programs for the department.  Maintains knowledge and compliance with regulatory agencies and standards/safety goals.  Prefer two years clinical experience in Emergency Department as well as the Medical/Surgical area.  Must be a graduate from an approved Professional Nursing program.  Must have current Iowa Registered Nurse license.  Certification in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support required.

Registered Nurse or Surgery Tech

Perioperative Department

Full-time position (36 hours per week).  Works Monday through Friday + call required.  RN utilizes the nursing process to provide and direct quality patient care in the Outpatient Clinic setting.  Directs and provides patient/family teaching.  Provides leadership when working with health team member in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.  Surgical Technician performs a variety of peri-operative duties with limited direct patient care during the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases under the direct supervision of an RN.  RN – applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries, and diseases using available resources in the assessment process.  Documents nursing assessments and intervention. Communicates information to peers, supervisors, physicians.  Surgery Tech – handles instruments, supplies, and equipment essential to the surgical procedure.  Displays understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates needs of the surgeon.  Functions collaboratively with the medical staff and other disciplines to provide and enhance patient care.  Maintains the sterile field.  Cleans and prepares instruments for disinfection and terminal sterilization.  RN – must be a graduate from an approved Professional Nursing program and have a current Iowa license.  Surgery Tech – must have certification in Surgical Technology.  Certification in Basic Life Support is required within three months of date of hire.  Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is required within 12 months of hire.

Registered Nurse

Public Health Department

Part-time position (24 hours per week).  Works three days per week, based on needs of department.  Utilizes the nursing process to provide and direct quality patient care.  Provides leadership when working with team members in maintaining standards of professional nursing practice.  Promotes health and wellness through education, clinical practice, and home care for the ill and disabled.  Completes assessments/ reassessments, pertinent documentation, plan of care and evaluations on time.  Completes forms per policy for admission/readmission for Public Health services.  Communicates with practitioners to keep them informed of changes in patient condition or problems.  Experience in nursing preferred.  Must be a graduate from an approved Professional Nursing program.  Certification in Basic Life Support is required.

Applications being accepted for health care educational grants

Education-GrantsApplications for healthcare educational grants from the Endowment for Education are now being accepted.  The grants are made available through the Lucille Petersen Endowment Fund, which was established in 1988.  The funds will be distributed to selected applicants seeking short or long-range educational assistance to pursue healthcare occupations.  A June 30th deadline has been set for applications to be submitted for the fall 2019 semester.

The funds will be distributed as grants—loans that will be forgiven if the recipient is employed within a 20-mile radius of Harlan in his or her specialized healthcare occupation following completion of courses.  If a recipient cannot fulfill the service terms under which the loan will be forgiven, the money is subject to a five percent interest rate and repayment of principal.
