Learning for Life Group

The Learning for Life and Kid’s Korner group met on February 9th at Myrtue Medical Center. The group topic was Family Talk. We made an envelope of “101 Stories”, read books, and played.

Group is a good time for the kids to socialize and interact with their peers and for moms to get out and meet other parents in the community.

We had 2 families and 5 children attend the group.

Learning for Life and the Kid’s Korner program are offered through Myrtue Medical Center’s Department of Community Health. The programs are primarily funded through the Tri-County (Harrison, Monona, and Shelby Co.) Empowerment Project. The Learning for Life program follows the Parents as Teachers curriculum and it is designed to offer developmental information and support to all parents of infants and young children (prenatal to kindergarten entry). The goal of the program is to help parents give their child the best possible start in life. Parents as Teachers uses four ways to partner with parents to help each child reach his/her potential for learning: a personal visit in your home, group meetings, screenings, and offer a resource network. We come to your home monthly! The Kid’s Korner program is an incentive program where the parents earn points for healthy activities such as well child visits, library time, and education and they can use those points to purchase items for their child. Items include and vary: car seats, diapers, home safety supplies, baby equipment, and developmental toys. In addition, we also have 2 certified passenger safety technicians who can help and answer your car seat questions and installation needs with you.

The Kids Korner store is located in the Community Health office at Myrtue Medical Center, 1213 Garfield Avenue, Harlan, Iowa. This will be the distribution site where families can redeem earned points for incentive items such as maternity/infant supplies, household safety items, diapers, educational toys and books, and other items necessary to support a safe and secure environment and to promote intellectual stimulation of young children.
